Bullfighting Facts

bullfighting factslThe pro-bullfighting lobby would have us believe that bullfighting is an art form, and an ancient culture which must be preserved for future generations. In reality it is a cruel bloodsport which causes enormous suffering to the animals involved, and usually results in death.


  • An estimated 40,000 bulls are killed in Europe each year. The total number killed across the world is estimated at 250,000.  
  • Whilst it is still legal in most parts of Spain, bullfighting is banned by law in Catalonia and in the Canary Islands. 
  • Bullfighting is banned by law in most parts of France. However, it remains legal in parts of the south and east of the country.
  • Despite claims to the contrary, bullfighting is not a key economic sector. Less
    than 400 people are employed full-time all year round by the bullfighting industry in Spain. 
  • Famous writers and thinkers who have opposed bullfighting include George Bernard Shaw, Franz Kafka, Mark Twain and H.G Wells.
  • The European bullfighting industry receives up to 600m Euros a year in public funding.
  • Recent opinion polls have shown that a significant majority of people are against bullfighting. 89% of British people would not visit a bullfight (ComRes, 2008), whilst in Spain 67% are not interested in bullfighting (Gallup, 2008). In France, 69% of people oppose public funding for bullfighting (YouGov, 2009)
  • Each year the European Union provides an estimated £37 million pounds in subsidies to farmers which breed bulls for bullfights.
